I bought the 20,000 sq ft building about 14 years ago. It was my first big development and I did it on my own (ie no business partners), creating 18 individual apartments including what was the most expensive apartment in Leeds for many years.
I won an architectural award for my lighting scheme of the grade 2 listed building and sold the apartments for almost £6m. At the time it caused lots of interest because every other city centre apartment was being built in a very similar style with pale wood floors, white walls, travertine tiled bathrooms and beech entrance doors then furnished by Ikea! I sold for much more per sq ft than other developers by offering a unique property and at the time I also achieved a higher percentage of home owner occupiers than other city centre apartment developments.
You will see I was using coving and plaster architectural details and I installed german kitchens and extensive use of marble.
I did a lightweight construction on the roof of the grade 2 listed building at the Aire Street side and created apartment 17 at 19 Wellington Street, 14 years on the same owner occupier is in residence. The photos of this development are 15 years old.
Many of my buyers asked me to furnish their apartments for them and I am proud of how well the development still looks and I often hear comments that it hasn't dated.
